In an essay entitled "Ben Wohlberg's Paintings are Possessed of a Rare, Gritty Grace," editor and reviewer Ed McCormack of Studio and Gallery writes that the artist has no interest in imitating nature, but "rather ... prefers to explore the processes of painting and the properties of pigment" autonomously, "making their own vitality surrogates for the vital forces of nature."
